What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ancient medical system that was first developed in China many thousands of years ago. Still popular today, the benefits of acupuncture are felt by millions of people worldwide.

During an acupuncture treatment very fine needles are inserted into the skin in specific points along meridians – energy lines. This is often a very pleasant experience and should produce a mild tingling sensation.

The stresses and strains of modern life mean that we are often left feeling out of balance and unwell.

Acupuncture differs from western medicine in that it aims to treat the whole and to restore balance to the body and mind. This means that the root cause of symptoms is found and treated but patients’ overall sense of wellbeing is also improved as natural balance is restored.

What can acupuncture treat?

Stress, anxiety & depression

Acupuncture has been shown to influence the autonomic nervous system, which controls the body’s stress response. By regulating the nervous system, releasing mood-enhancing neurochemicals, and lowering cortisol levels it helps promote relaxation, reduce heart rate, and lower blood pressure, contributing to a decrease in stress and anxiety levels. Studies suggest it can be as effective as other treatments, with fewer side effects. It offers a holistic, drug-free approach for an issue we treat so often in clinic, whether directly or as a root cause for the main condition.

Infertility & IVF support

Acupuncture may support fertility and IVF by improving blood flow to reproductive organs, regulating hormones, reducing stress, and potentially enhancing sperm quality. Some studies suggest acupuncture can improve pregnancy rates, especially when used during IVF, though evidence is mixed. While not a guaranteed treatment, acupuncture may be a beneficial complementary therapy for infertility. Consulting with both a fertility specialist and a licensed acupuncturist is recommended.

Digestive disorders - IBS, bloating and constipation

Acupuncture can effectively complement treatment for digestive disorders like IBS, IBD and acid reflux. It regulates the digestive system and reduces inflammation to provide symptom relief whilst also improving gut motility that can help ease conditions like constipation or loose stools. It also alleviates stress, which is often linked to digestive issues.

Pregnancy discomforts & labour induction

Often used during pregnancy to alleviate discomforts like nausea, back and pelvic pain, headaches, and swelling. It is particularly useful for turning a baby in late pregnancy stages and also helps with labour induction by stimulating hormonal release and preparing the body for labour. Acupuncture should always be performed by a licensed practitioner but never more so than when pregnant with several points contraindicated and to be avoided through this term.

Pain management

By working on specific body points to stimulate nerves and muscles acupuncture can promote pain relief by releasing endorphins and improving blood flow. It's used for managing chronic pain, headaches, postoperative pain, as well as musculoskeletal issues and studies suggest acupuncture is particularly effective for lower back pain and migraines with knee pain, shoulder and neck pain also benefiting as well as fibromyalgia, though results may vary. It can be a beneficial treatment to consider for those looking for drug-free treatment or not wanting the side effects often accompanying strong medication and NSAIDs.

Headaches & migraine

Acupuncture is recognised by the NHS and WHO guidelines as a beneficial treatment for migraines and headaches. It works by stimulating the release of endorphins, modulating neurotransmitters, and reducing inflammation, potentially easing pain. Research shows acupuncture can reduce the frequency and intensity of both migraines and tension headaches, with effects comparable to conventional treatments and fewer side effects. Many patients report improved well-being and reduced stress, contributing to its effectiveness as part of a comprehensive headache management plan.

Skin conditions including acne & psoriasis

Acupuncture may help with skin conditions by reducing inflammation, modulating the immune system, regulating blood circulation, providing pain and itch relief, and managing stress. It is used to treat eczema, psoriasis, acne, rosacea, shingles, vitiligo, and hives. A 2012 study published in the journal Allergy found that acupuncture could reduce itch intensity in eczema patients by modulating allergic immune reactions.

Menopause

Acupuncture can be an effective partner to help manage menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, mood swings, insomnia, and pain. Several studies suggest that acupuncture can reduce the frequency and severity of hot flashes and night sweats by influencing the autonomic nervous system to help regulate body temperature and reduce these symptoms. For the mood swings, anxiety, stress and even depression that can all be experienced due to hormonal fluctuations acupuncture has been shown to affect the release of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine to help improve mood and emotional stability.

Fatigue, Tiredness & Insomnia

Acupuncture can help alleviate fatigue and insomnia by balancing the body's energy, reducing stress, and promoting relaxation. It may improve sleep quality, reduce daytime fatigue, and enhance overall well-being by stimulating the nervous system and releasing neurotransmitters like serotonin. Studies suggest acupuncture can be as effective as conventional treatments for insomnia, particularly in reducing the time it takes to fall asleep and improving overall sleep, whilst also being beneficial for chronic fatigue by improving energy levels, reducing stress, and enhancing overall well-being.
